Blockco Ltd is an information technology company that originated from work conducted by the University of Nicosia beginning in 2014. The university recognized an emerging problem: the prevalence of fraudulent documents and the susceptibility of credentials to destruction or tampering. Recognizing that blockchain technology could address these vulnerabilities, the university became the first globally to implement blockchain for issuing academic certificates in 2015, utilizing the Bitcoin blockchain for its security properties.
