Founded in 1900 by Canon Frank Darvall Newham, The English School started with just 13 students, and has since grown to become Cyprus's premier English-medium institution, attracting a diverse student body from both local and international communities. The school is a co-educational, day school currently with 1,110 pupils on roll, offering the British curriculum leading to IGCSE and A Level examinations, with lessons taught in English.
The school is designated as bi-communal, with both Greek and Turkish Cypriots being educated at the school, returning to its bi-communal status in September 2003 by re-enrolling Turkish Cypriot students. Although a British curriculum school, The English School stays true to its Cypriot heritage and finds ways to creatively combine the two models, with students benefiting from IGCSE/A Level curriculum alongside Cyprus's own culture and traditions.
